The piping scene in Scotland is big! (It's Scotland after all). You can get a decent instructor at pretty much any part, but two of the bigger piping *schools* are in Glasgow (the National Piping Centre and the College of Piping).

I'd like to go into the highlands. Next trip!!

I actually already play, but that sounds like a great idea! I should warn you though, it's not something you can pick up in a day or two, it takes at least 6 months to a year..

If you're serious and keen, drop me a PM and I can point you in the right direction. I'm not sure where you are, but there are plenty of excellent pipers and teachers in North America. (The current world champions are Canadian). Try the Bob Dunsire Bagpipe Forums.. It's powered by the same forum as this one.

Cheers all!

I'm actually from Australia. The piping scene is pretty big over here as well. There is a Pipes & Drums band that rehearse right next door to my work. I rmemeber back in the day when i used to train chilling outside on a thursday night listenening to them. it was awesome!

when i head to scotland it would be early august, for the tattoo, and then the highland games in braemer, then travelling, but wanting to come back to scotland for xmas and new years.

my brother tried to learn the pipes a few years ago at high school, but got bored. i tried using the chanter and it got me excited for! if only my high school had given out bagpipe lessons!!!! :P

My fiancee just booked tickets for us to see the Tattoo this year. I've always wanted to go and I'm really looking forward to it. Whenever I'm in the need for some piping music I go to the bbc and stream the latest episode of pipeline.

Although it works for me here in Aus I do believe it is meant to be region specific so it may not work for everyone.

In response to the OP, I stayed at Euro Hostel when I was in Glasgow. Was the end of '05 though so things may have changed a fair bit, but I remember that the dorms were comfy, the TV is huge and the breakfast was really good. Oh and the place was full of hot chicks! - This I remember well as I was not single at the time
