Rail tickets generally do not get cheaper (unless you catch an early bird or off season winter sale) and cost the same price at virtually every site that sells them. I recommend ordering your pass about a month before you leave. It comes with a train time table that will help you with your planning.
I recommend checking out this site: Pass Finder It will help you pick out the pass that is best fitted to your itinerary. |

Plane tickets are usually cheapest about 3 months before your departure.
The link I gave you should help you figure out which rail pass is best suited for your itinerary. |

There's a hostel in the Cinque Terre in the village of Manarola. There's a curfew (I think it's either midnight or 1am, depending on the season) but there's not a whole lot in terms of nightlife in this area, so I doubt it's much of an issue. It's not the best hostel (no free breakfast) but is probably the cheapest option in the region anyway. I would spend about 2 days here. The first day chill out, explore the town where you are staying, maybe head down to the beach. 2nd day, get up early and take the train to the farthest village and hike back. If you can't do that physically, you can always stop in one of the villages and take another train back the village you started in (a train pass between the villages for a day is super cheap... only 6 or 8 euros, I think).
Also it seems there is an HI hostel in Carcassonne, but that is the only hostel there. HI hostels are pretty nice if not exactly party central. This one does offer breakfast and sheets in the price of 20.80 euros though, so it's a good deal. I don't know much about Carcassonne so I can't recommend a length of time here, but it's a smaller place, so too many days and you might get bored. |
