the only thing is, an iphone takes so much longer to type things up. i am one of those people who will only ever buy a touch phone once we are forced to. i have big fingers and find touch phones hard to "type" on

I'm the same, I don't like touch screen things either... Give me a REAL keyboard any day!

One of my good friends just got a really neat little netbook and I love it. It has a nearly full size keyboard too. Once I have the money saved up, I'm going to get one as well.

I guess my take is that almost anything I'm going carry on a backpack trip is going to be a bit of a compromise. If I take my MacBook, I'm gonna leave some other stuff behind. Even if I was taking a netbook.

If I take my iPhone, I can consolidate my guidebooks, journal, movie player, alarm clock, (maybe camera too) and so many other things into a small device that won't take any space in my pack because it's in my front pocket.

Also, I've been testing out some voice applications that make the keyboard less necessary too...

But then again... I am an Apple fanboy and you don't mess with my iPhone.

ok so I know this whole technology discussion ended several months ago but Im new to the site and am just now reading all this. Does anyone have any opinions on bringing an ipod touch? Is wifi widespread enough in most European cities that I'll be able to go online with it when i need to? I often find here in North Carolina that there isnt wifi very many places so I rarely use my ipod to go online which is disappointing. If i did buy the electronic version of some guidebooks could i access them if im not within reach of a wifi signal? With an iphone you would want to use wifi since its free but if its an emergency or u really needed to, you could turn on the data thing and just get online but ipod touches cant do that....

There's a lot of wifi over there, it just keeps getting more and more common. You can bring it if you want, just keep a close eye on it, otherwise it may walk away. You could definitely do the electronic guide book option. Just ask before you book if the hostel has wifi.

The electronic guidebooks (LP's anyway) are PDF files - so once you download them you don't need wifi or network access to use them.

All these apps and guidebooks on an i-phone sound really great for about 42 minutes until the pathetic little excuse of a battery dies. It's kinda useless after that. I use my guidebooks a lot, and I don't think there is a battery available today that could keep up - and certainly not a fruity phone.
