You don't need anything else in terms of paperwork. You'll show it when you fly in, and at hostels along the way, but you won't even need to show it as you cross borders.

the only other thing i would recommend is carrying the address of the place you will be staying when you get off the plane - the immigration card always asks for this, so it's just nice to have it on hand when you're filling out the customs forms.

Ahm, that's not entirely true. Depends on method of travel. You will definitely need to show your passport when you leave the UK. Also if you cross in to Switzerland by train you are likely to meet police who will want to see your passport. Same goes when you leave Switzerland and return to the EU.

The Police can ask to see your passport wherever you are in Europe and you are required to present it for inspection on request. This is an unlikely event but it has happened to me :P

England may want to see proof of onward travel out of the UK and eventual departure from Europe.

I guess I shouldn't have implied that she'll never have to show it, because as you said, an officer can ask to see it at any time. I've done all those border crossings and have not had to show my passport, but it is very very intelligent to have your passport on you at all times. Buy a money belt and keep it in there always.

For a trip like this, you will need lots of energy. Why not cut out one country and rest in one for a week? You will be so glad you did this in the middle of your trip. When we went, I put all the info for each country in an envelope. On the outside of the envelope I wrote the directions to our first hostle etc. then when we checked in, I threw away the last countrys envelope and used this countrys envelope full of all the info I had collected while I was planning my trip from home. It was a fun way to be organized for each country. Have a great time, jill

your itinerary is do able - but factor in some days to crash - you think you won't need them but they'll creep up on you!
